Backyard Birding: “Birds in Migration”—movement, and motivations
On Saturday, March 7, 2026 Nikki Pyle, environmental educator at the Dungeness River Nature Center, presented a program focused on the migration patterns and timing of birds local to Clallam County. She described the instinctive motivations that drive birds to return each year to their breeding or winter‑feeding grounds and reviewed the tools and skills we, as citizen scientists, can use to monitor migrations, compile data, and document the importance of our migratory habitats.
The program also examined the environmental, geographic, and human‑related challenges birds face along their journeys, and highlighted ways we can support migrating birds in our own backyards while helping protect the many species that travel the Pacific Flyway and rely on the unique habitats of the North Olympic Peninsula.
