“A Swan Study: Insights, Storylines, and Partnerships”
Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society (OPAS) presentation by Kyle Spragens, WDFW Waterfowl Section Manager
March 19, 2025
An innovative swan-tracking project initiated by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and a CalPoly Humboldt graduate student is shedding light on how the Pacific Coast Trumpeter Swans use the landscapes they depend on, particularly while they overwinter in northwest Washington. Kyle Spragens, Waterfowl Section Manager for WDFW, provides important context on this swan population and preliminary findings one year into data collection. This research project will continue to provide critical insights on the ecological requirements and population-level conservation of these magnificent migratory birds.
