Meeting Place: Meet by the restrooms across from Harborview Park at the east end of Ediz Hook, near the entrance to the Coast Guard station.
Directions from Port Angeles Wharf: Head west along Front Street until it turns into Marine Drive. Continue along this road until it curves out onto Ediz Hook and turns into Ediz Hook Road. Keep going until you find the restrooms on the left (north) side.
Features: We will be focusing on looking for birds in the water, but some shorebirds and songbirds are often found there as well, like Black-bellied Plovers, Black Oystercatchers, corvids, finches, sparrows, and blackbirds. We’ll try and pick through the gulls to identify species (although anyone who has spent time looking at gulls knows the challenge this can be). We’ll likely see plenty of cormorants, loons, grebes, a wide variety of ducks, and alcids such as Common Murres. With luck, we may spot Rhinoceros Auklets and Marbled Murrelets, along with raptors such as Bald Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, and Peregrine Falcons.
Throughout the morning, we will work our way towards the base of Ediz Hook to check other areas and environments. Time and interest permitting, we may continue on towards the waterfront areas of the Port Angeles mainland to look at different areas of the harbor, but the main focus will be Ediz Hook.
What to bring: Binoculars and weather-appropriate clothing. It is often cold and windy out there! If you don’t have binoculars, please come anyway—there will be spotting scopes for all to view through as well. And if you have a spotting scope and want to share with others, they're always a welcome addition.
