Washington Audubon Lights Out Resolution
by Joyce Volmut

On October 3, 2025, Washington State Audubon Conservation Committee (WSACC) unanimously adopted a statewide resolution “Lights Out Washington.”

Washington State Audubon Conservation Committee is composed of the conservation chairs of the 25 independent Audubon chapters in Washington. WSACC was formally chartered in 2001 to coordinate and prioritize legislative lobbying and other policy efforts. Its goal is to create a powerful, cohesive voice for “One Audubon” conservation priorities of statewide and regional significance.

The resolution was developed and led by a collaborative effort between the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society and DarkSky Olympic Peninsula to work with individuals, businesses, and communities to:

• promote the shielding of outdoor lights and prevent light from being emitted upwards

• engage in public education about the hazards of light pollution and the dangers it presents to birds, the environment and all living forms turn off unnecessary lights by midnight during bird migration (March 1st- June 15th and August 1st - November 15th) Bird Cast Migration Dashboard - Washington.
