Foggy Shorebirds Field Trip

"The Walk Into Oblivion!"

Early on the foggy morning of September 6, 2021, eleven adventurous birders clad in rubber boots and carrying spotting scopes, made their way across the mudflats near 3 Crabs and later, Dungeness Landing. Led by bird gurus Bob Boekelheide and Marie Grad, the group was in quest of migrating shorebirds on this misty field trip at low tide. The Dungeness Landing mudflats offered the best sightings that included a small group of Short-billed Dowitchers, Sanderlings, Western Sandpipers, and one juvenile Red Knot. The group consensus was that the Red Knot was the bird of the day!  Here is the shorebird list from Dungeness Landing: https://ebird.org/checklist/S94290176

Bob reports that during their travels they discovered donut-shaped snail eggs attached to eelgrass blades, possibly from lacuna snails.

Even though fewer birds were spotted in the fog, it was a fun trek for all!
