Narrative inspired by Skip Perkins
Birdwatching is an adventure that can begin just a few steps outside your door, especially for those facing mobility challenges. While long hikes and short jogs might be out of reach, the joy of observing nature remains—sometimes as close as your backyard.

Recently, in Sequim, I had the pleasure of watching a striking Rufous Hummingbird near my feeder. This bold little bird, known for its ruling attitude, delighted me with a private show. Perched on a twig off my deck, he posed gracefully for photos, his vibrant neck feathers shifting colors with each movement—a true display of nature's artistry.
Unlike Anna’s Hummingbirds, which stay in Washington year-round, Rufous Hummingbirds take their adventure south for the winter, only to return in April and stake their claim on the local feeders. It's a treat to witness their spirited interactions, especially this particular hummer, who seemed to relish the spotlight while guarding his favorite “food truck.”
