Calling all local bird photographers!

Christina Heliker has again generously agreed to organize the bird photos. She’ll be our technical advisor and assist in projecting images. We encourage you to show off your best bird photos at our January 2024 program. This is not a contest, but a chance to share your unique views of birds and their behavior. The subject of your photos needn’t be a rare bird. The audience will also enjoy a good image of a chickadee doing something interesting or just being beautiful. You may submit pictures taken locally or anywhere on your travels.

If you have photos you would like to share please send Christina a maximum of 8 images by January 11 at the latest. That way she can get them organized and loaded on the Center’s system before the meeting, and everything will be ready to go.

Note: If you plan to submit, please let Christina know ASAP. If more people than usual are interested, she may need to reduce the number of photos each of you can show. Send photos and questions to Christina Heliker at cheliker@olypen.com.

Photo night has been one of our favorite programs, so even if you don’t wish to submit photos, be sure to come and enjoy birds!

Important: Please review your images carefully and do all your final tweaking before you send them. Last-minute substitutions are strongly discouraged.

Once Christina knows how many are participating, she will let you know how much time you have to show your pictures. To ensure that everyone gets their allotted time, there will be a time keeper!

Plan on letting the audience know what bird they’re looking at and where and what time of year you took the picture. If you want to put that info on your photo, it saves having to remember to say it, and leaves you more time to tell us other stuff. We enjoy your bird stories about the photos. You do not need to send Christina that information unless you want her to add it to your slides for you.

From Christina:

Image Guidelines: Please save your images as jpgs and size them to be 1600 pixels on the long edge. Anything larger doesn’t make a perceptible difference when projected. The dpi doesn’t make a difference so long as you stick with 1600 pixels on the long edge. If you’re not sure how to resize your images, send them as is, and I’ll do it for you.

Decide on the order of your images and name them thusly: your last name 01, your last name 02, etc., e.g., heliker01.jpg, heliker02.jpg, etc. This is important! It makes it vastly easier to keep track of all the photos that come in and ensures that they are in the order you want them projected.

If you don’t know how to rename your photos, its easy: right click on the file name (e.g., img654.jpg) and then click on Rename.
Please send your images in multiple emails, if necessary, to keep any one email below 30 MB. If any of this is confusing, don’t hesitate to send me your questions.
