OPAS Backyard Birding: “Birds: The Inside Story”
Presenters: Shirley Anderson & Ken Wiersema
Saturday, November 7, 2026—10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Rainshadow Hall, Dungeness River Nature Center
Suggested Donation: $5
For more than eleven years, Shirley and Ken have combined her deep background in biology with his trademark whimsy to create their “inside story” program. They designed this presentation for folks new to birding and to our region—as well as for those who wish to hone and expand their birding knowledge and skills.
This updated program will concentrate on the physical features and senses unique to birds, examining how birds eat, digest, see, breathe, sing, hear, reproduce, and fly—as well as how and where birds are attracted to the microclimates and habitats of the Olympic Peninsula. Participants will enrich their understanding of what makes a bird a bird by viewing new graphic illustrations and local photographs and by handling a collection of bird skeletons and feathers on display.
Admission to Backyard Birding programs is free, though a suggested donation of $5 per person helps support ongoing OPAS education programs.
