Come join discussion leader Dan Stahler to share your thoughts on this entertaining literary journey through the structure and function of the “everyday miracle of nature” that is a bird’s egg.
The author, an expert in the reproductive biology of birds, takes readers on an outside-to-inside journey through an egg. Each stage from creation and fertilization to hatching is examined, with current scientific knowledge placed within a historical context.
Of note to folks working on the Pigeon Guillemot Monitoring Project, the author studied guillemots in the UK for 40 years. The book begins with examination of the beautifully colored and patterned eggs of the guillemot, then moves on to the eggs of hens, cuckoos and many other birds. Interwoven with and supporting the scientific information are stories of individuals who from as far back as Ancient Egypt have been fixated on the study and collection of eggs, not always to the benefit of the species that produced them.
